Don't discard reading about this park because it was torn (or rather burnt down) before you were born it gave rise to many other KC theme parks including the present Worlds Of Fun. Electric Park heralded in the Age of KC amusement on May 19,1907 which might seem along time ago to most people but in the grand scheme of things really wasn't that long ago. It was built by Mike and Ferdinand Heim, of the Heim Brewery, and was located from 45th to 47th, the Paseo to Woodland Avenue. It was also nicknamed the "Great White City of Brush Creek". Unlike today people did not travel by cars which at that time was just a new invention but by the famous KC street cars. Over 50,000 people a DAY streamed to this park to view and have fun. Electric Park was most famous for its 100,000 lights that shown every night with the fireworks displays. It doesn't sound like much does it? But in 1907, it was only two decades after the invention of the light bulb so it must have been pretty impressive at that time. Other famous attractions and rides of Electric Park are listed below.
The Scenic Railway
The Scenic Railway (which is shown in the above picture) must have been the Mamba of its day. It opened in the original year (1907) and probably lasted until the fire of May 28, 1925 destroyed it.
Living Statuary
When I read about this I thought it was completly weird, but then I noticed it was probably an idea concocted out of a traveling carnival show. This was a show featuring young women who would rise every hour from a fountain on the adjact lake. They would then pose on a pedestal as colored lights flooded over them. Remember people this was during the good-old days before the Politically Correct nonsense.
SPIRAL COASTER- (1910 - Unknown)
BEN HUR RACER/GREYHOUND RACER- (1913 - 1922)
Designer/Construction: Prior/Church
GREYHOUND- (1917 - 1925)
BIG DIPPER (1922 - 1925)
Designer/Construction: Miller/Baker
DIP THE DIPS- (1910 - Unknown)
DRAGON'S GORGE- (1909 - Unknown)
This is the park that Brancato Built in 1923 to in a way replace Electric Park as the main Kansas City amusement park. And so it stayed as Kansas City's ONLY amusement park for over 50 years! Until Worlds Of Fun came along. Fairyland located at 7501 Prospect was famous for its two major roller coasters the Skyrocket and then the Wildcat! The Wildcat at its time was the largest steel roller coaster in existence! Fairyland went as far to have 34 rides, which is really nothing compared to Worlds Of Fun that opened with 40, but impressive for a park that lasted over half a century! Fairyland was not destroyed by Worlds Of Fun however, it was destroyed on November 8, 1978 by a minitornado. However, the decision to completly close the park down did not come until later that year. For more information on the Skyrocket or the Wildcat see below. Also, since I was not born until the year this park closed I do not remember anything about Fairyland. If you have any memories or stories you would like to tell we would LOVE to hear from you! E-mail us at extremeroller@hotmail.com
THE SKYROCKET- (1923 - 1966)
Designer/Construction: Miller/Baker
THE WILDCAT- (1967 - 1977)
The Wildcat was Fairylands crowning achievement. Worlds Of Fun has never even broke the record or LARGEST STEEL ROLLER COASTER IN THE WORLD! The Wildcat was designed and constructed by Vaszin/Leis/NAD. When Fairyland closed this was not the end to The Wildcat however. As far as I know it was disassembled and moved to Frontier City in Oklahoma City, OK in 1991.
"We're off to see the Wizard. . . The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!", "Follow the Yellow Brick Road!". Do these phrases bring back memories? Your answer is probably Yes. Well, the Classic movie made in Kansas is coming to life! In the very near future (somtime in 1999) groundbreaking will commence for the Wonderful World of Oz Theme Park! A spot hasn't been finalized for the park yet.
Some proposed sites are in Kansas City Kansas, near the future NASCAR track, somewhere near Smithville Lake, or near the Sunflower Army Amunition Plant in DeSoto. Once they do find a place to begin groundbreaking, the park will take about three years to build, opening it in the year 2001 or 2002. This will be a GREAT addition to the Area and it will be the Largest theme park in the State of Kansas, Joyland in Wichita being second. Landmark Entertainment will be the Designer and creator of "The Wonderful World of Oz".
HAUNTED FOREST- This world will be a creepy one, probably similar to Worlds of Fun's African section.
WICKED WITCH'S CASTLE- One of the rides here will be the "Flying Monkey" themed Inverted Coaster!
MUNCHKIN LAND- Now, this is just my opinion, but from the name it will probably be the Children's area of the park.
YELLOW BRICK COUNTRY- Here will probably be the Mega-Woodie that the park will have, named TWISTER, of course.
EMERALD CITY- Of course, they designers have to include a huge recreation of emerald city! The Park just couldn't be called the Wonderful World of Oz without an Emerald City.
